Gondolier

Let first start off by saying how happy I am to now own a new Rebecca Minkoff Brynn tote! I had heard about the online sale (which ended last Friday) and was hoping to find the Brynn as part of their sale. Of course it wasn't. They had introduced new colors for the season and were full price.  I was quite sad. Then, I read a post  by The Budget Babe that mentioned the sale AND that they had just released quite a few bags at TJ Maxx! I thought well, there's one nearby, I'll stop by and take a gander. To my surprise, and luck, I found the Brynn! And I found it in this gorgeous charcoal color (a good classic color that will go with most outfits).

Every time I put on a combination of black and white stripes and some red accents, I think of a Gondolier. You know, the guys that row the gondolas around the canals of Venice? Yeah, you could say that's where I got my outfit inspiration?

:: Outfit Details ::
Black & White Striped 3/4 Top (old) :: H&M, this one would be cool, but similar here
Black Cotton Pencil Skirt :: Express, similar here
Brynn Tote :: Rebecca Minkoff, also in purple, and in peach!
Red Pumps :: Dolce Vita
Croisette Eyeglasses :: Dior, also seen here, here, here & here
Red Floral Scarf :: H&M, similar here
Thick Red Leather Belt (old) :: Anne Klein, skinny version here (which is what I originally wanted for this outfit)

Yes, I have these shoes in three colors. I love them! And they were on sale... I'm a sales shopper.

How perfect was it that I also have matching black and white striped glasses?! By the way, speaking of glasses, if you are a glasses wearer, the optician side of me will ALWAYS recommend anti-glare for your lenses. I cannot tell you how much it helps with glare from TVs, computer screens, night time driving, and asphalt glare! People don't always realize that there is still light rays bouncing off all surfaces, causing eye strain! And it also helps cosmetically. You don't see WHITE when you take photos! I also recommend iZon lenses for ALL these things.

Some close ups of the accessories!

And I thought I'd share a close up of the accessories and a random photo bomber! Peepers... what is it about you cats and your curiosity?? You sniff that scarf!

Summer, Summer, Summer Time

It's almost here. Summer! The weather is getting warmer (most days) here in SoCal. I can feel it! So much that I actually wore shorts. And I never wear shorts! I don't know what it is but if I'm going to show off my white legs, I'd much rather do it in a skirt than in shorts. There's something about singling out each leg that makes me feel uncomfortable versus having them both wrapped up in a single chute of fabric. I know it might not make sense to you... it makes sense to me. I think. :P

But alas, here are my bare legs, singled out. Because it's hot. And I'm giving shorts a whirl.

:: Outfit Details ::
Striped Chunky Cable Cardigan :: Banana Republic
Blush Shell :: H&M (current), similar online here
Navy Scalloped Shorts (old) :: Urban Outfitters, cuter version here
Brown Sandals :: Mossimo/Target, also comes in black

Mint Chain Necklace :: H&M, similar here
Feminine Wayfarer Eyeglasses :: Dior

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all have some great plans for the weekend. I've got a full plate ahead of me. And, I also plan on not wearing shorts anytime soon. :P

Flashing Our Brights :: Highlighter Yellow

Neon and fluorescent seem to be in this season! I was able to pick up this gingham button up shirt at Ann Taylor LOFT for 30% off, a few weeks ago and love that it goes with basic blacks and also can be dressed down in denim too.

I'm a sucker for good sales. I also think that I don't have any one type of style. I buy what I like and my dress depends on what I'm feeling. Sometimes I like to be more casual, sometimes I'll dress it up some. Sometimes I like wearing more accessories, sometimes not. One of my friends says that I mix and match my items well. Sometimes I feel like I can... some days, I have the hardest time with that. I think some of my best outfits come from last minute decisions... if only I had time to photograph THOSE outfits... maybe one of these days...

Cruisin' for a Bruisin'

No. No one got hurt in the making of this post. The colors black and blue just remind me of bruises (even though they're sometimes more purple than black or blue) and also the ol' Backstreet Boys album. But of course I'm not talking about either of those things.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Sneak Peek :: Dior Croisette Eyeglasses

I realize that I have not done a post on actual eyeglasses ON me. Everytime I do a shoot, I'm always outdoors and it's sunny so I naturally select my sunglasses to go with my outfits.

My optician side will tell you that it is always best to wear good UV protective sunwear outdoors at all times. I can tell you that I used to not wear anything and would squint all the time! Ever since I started working in the optical industry, I've learned that good UV protection goes a long way; such as delayed Cataract development. And I'm not talking about the music group (Different spelling anyway. Please insert cheese here).

Anyway, here's a quick snap shot of my new glasses!

Matching sunnies! .. that do not look good on me so I did not get them.

And there you have it ladies and gentleman. (Part of) The 2012 Dior Croisette collection!

What do you think?

Wishful Wednesday :: Be Bold

I have always liked purple. But lately, I've been attracted to greens too. I love this scarf! I also love polka dots. Can't go wrong with mixing the two together! I know it's Spring time but I still can't get over booties. I still don't have a good pair that I can wear to work. I do really like these Botkier booties. Of course it's a bit out of my budget. My favorite season to dress for will always be Fall. Doesn't hurt to mix and match things from both seasons, right? In the meantime, I'll keep wishing for my beloved items of choice.

Eye Candy

Can I just share with you how excited I am to get new glasses? I am waiting for my new Dior Croisette eyeglasses to come back from the lab. I just sent ordered lenses for them yesterday so I should be getting them back in sometime next week. I am ecstatic!

I also ordered some new sunglasses from Gucci! I know this isn't the best photo. But I wanted to show you the color! Apparently, Gucci isn't offering this Blue Havana gradient on their website. You can only get these from your local optical shops. I'll have to take some photos with these this weekend so that you can see them!

By the way, if you're in the SoCal area, Pasadena is hosting a "626 Night Market". There will be tons of booths, food, and fun. Come and hang out and enjoy some of the Asian festivities! Den.m Bar will be there! If you want to know more about making an appointment, visit their website!

Anyway, that's my glasses spiel for now. Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Storytime :: Funny Happenings

So, a couple of days ago was "Bring-Your-Child-With-You-to-Get-Your-Eyes-Checked-Day". Or at least it felt like it. We had children screaming and running around the office. Causing havoc. And don't get me wrong, I like children but, man! Sometimes it gets rough out in our reception area! So rough that one of the children knocked over one of my boss's awards (made of glass) that it fell and broke in half.

The thing I like about the parent of this child was that he totally admitted it. Dad (who was just a walk in and not a regular patient of ours) wanted to pay us for this glass award statue (that we got for free) because he felt so bad about it. I kept telling him not to worry about it (because it was free) but he insisted on paying for it. And I kept saying, "Don't worry about it." He thanked us for our generosity and also said he'd be back to get his eyes checked with us and bring the rest of the family. Woohoo! Love gaining new clientele!

That clearly wasn't the worst of it. But it's way too much to type out. So I'll just break it down for you:

  • Mom and 3 yr old daughter walk in
  • 3yr old girl takes all our pebbles from our displays and throws them at our staff members
  • Mom does nothing
  • 3yr old continues to lick our contact lens models/displays
  • Mom does nothing
  • 3yr old grabs frames from our shelves and drawers and runs amuck in office
  • Mom says, "Babygirl, don't do that or you won't get momma's iPhone"
  • 3yr old continues to run amuck with and without frames and rocks
  • 3yr old gets hungry, asks mom to have milk
  • Mom has left boob hanging out free for 3yr old to nurse on in the middle of our office and no less than 2ft from a staff member
  • Staff member a bit startled and distracted
  • Office is left with broken Dior frame (see photos below for aftermath)

Sad times little Dior frame

We loved your berry colored style

We're sorry we let a 3yr old girl's death grip get hold of you :( You will be missed!

Yeah.. we're not gonna be able to sell this one anymore. And yeah, some of us are a little traumatized.

Readers, any ideas on how to deliver this news about the frame to Mom? I found the frame this way the next day. It had been "placed back" onto a different shelf.

10 Frame Styles for Your Lifestyle

There are so many types of styles out there. So many of my patients always ask me for help because there are so many factors involved in picking out the right frames for themselves. That’s where I come in. I am their “optical fashion consultant”. We’ll go over some key things to pay attention to. And also incorporate a little fun into the mix too, of course.

1. Nerdy/Geek-Chic
This is the style where you want to appear like a bookworm, and you may or may not be, but it definitely makes a statement.

Barton Perreira - Lawford in Black

2. Sophisticated
This is the look you want when you want to be taken seriously. Most corporate professionals ask me to help them choose something that will either make them look more distinguished or mature.

Lindberg - Spirit 2948 in K91/U12
3.   3. Retro/Vintage
The “retro” look is coming back. This is almost a very general look these days since wayfarers, nerdy/geek-chic, and “hipsters” have been so popular. This may even cover the “hipster” category.

John Varvatos – V132 in Black

4. Retro/Vintage-Chic
This is very similar to the regular retro look except, there’s a slightly modernized feel to it all. I think John Varvatos frames do just that with their frames. Great men’s line. A lot of women wear it too! This frame below is actually a titanium piece but it’s a thicker frame/metal that appears like zyl aka plastic frames.

John Varvatos – V141 in Brown

5. Grandma & Grandpappy’s Glasses (aka Hipster)
This is that very playful, oversized look. It’s really cool and fun. And BIG!! You can achieve this look with a nerd frame, or even with the vintage frame styles. There are so many ‘classes’ of hipster (I won’t get into that) but this is definitely one of them.

Paul Frank - Mustache Museum in Light Brown Stripe

6. Cat Eye – The Modernized ‘50s Look
Nowadays the new trend for women has been the cat-eye! It was not quite as well received initially, especially for my more “mature” patients. A lot of people did not want to ‘relive’ those years of their lives. Some, embrace it. Again, it all depends on what type of look you are trying to achieve.

Dior 3207 in Tortoise (I have these in purple!)

7. Conservative
Perhaps you don’t want to be noticed with glasses on. Maybe you don’t like so much “frame”. Maybe your ideal frame is just, simple. There are definitely frames that do just that and are still nice and not “cheap” looking.

8. Quirky and Daring
Do you want to make a big statement?  Do  you like really crazy frames? Well that is just fine. Some people like the really crazy and wacky colors. Some people really like going for different shapes and textures… even perforations in their glasses!

9. P3 – Round
“P3” is an old optician terms for circular frames. The eyewire/frame front is a complete circle (or very close to it). It’s a very classic look. This look is great on older (balding or bald) gentleman. Typically it’s done in horn rims (plastic frames) or in metal. I have a very specific type of clientele that asks for this style. And I’ve already kind of mentioned who…

Polo Ralph Lauren 1007 in Silver

10. Sporty
If your lifestyle involves a lot of sports, exercise, and physical activity, maybe a sportier look might be what you need. Some of my patients who are runners, tennis players, golfers, even fishers, get very sporty styled frames! They love the look in glasses AND sunglasses.

Quick Tips for Success

When you are ready to pick out frames, make sure that your eyes are nice and centered in the frame. You don't want your eyes to be too high and close to the top of the frame edge. You also don't want your glasses to be SO oversized that your eyes appear to be more nasal in position.

If you KNOW you have a high prescription, don't pick out rimless frames or frames that are really big. Remember, the bigger the frame, the heavy and thicker your lenses will be, despite thinner lens options. Also, try to pick out plastic frames. Since the frame itself is thicker, it hides more of your lens edge thickness.

Always add an anti-glare coating to your lenses. It helps minimize glare that you get while normally walking around, driving at night, using the computer, and helps deflect other types of glare that you don't always think of. It also, cosmetically, looks better! Especially in photos! No more white starbursts on your lenses! A great lens to get is the iZon High Definition lens. A premium product for a premium outcome. Try it. I have a pair and love it!

With tons of options out there, tons of color, and an ever-changing world of fashion, how do you choose? What do your frames say about you?
